Live Tonite - EllerSoul
Records
Julius Pittman & the Revival
What a fabulous collection of songs! This live recording captures an abundance
of energy and old school soul. We haven't heard this kind of ensemble playing
in ages, and it is truly wonderful to experience it on this CD.
We can only
imagine what it must be like to catch this group live - a
truly magical musical experience.
Sparkling horn arrangements, fabulous groove from the rhythm section,
wonderful vocal harmonies, and cruising above it all, Julius Pittman's
soaring vocals and lush Hammond B-3 tones.
Check it out!

Mill Block Blues - Katy
Mae Productions
Ruff Kutt Blues Band
This CD is presented as a "tribute to the life and people who lived on
the Cotton Mill block in a small town in North Texas." It is produced by
legendary blues guitarist Anson Funderburgh, who plays on 10 of the 13
tracks, and is brimming with genuine Texas Blues music - and it is a joy
to listen to!
The honesty and authenticity of the music and the enthusiasm of the artists
jumps out on every track. We love everything about it - the songs, the
arrangements and most of all the fantastic performances by this great group
of musicians.
We think you'll love it too!

Roundhouse Blues - Hat
and Case Music
Big Shot Reub and The Reloaders
We love to listen to guitar, bass and drum trios.
It takes superb musicians
to pull it off and when done well, the music sounds clean, simple and
fresh.
Big Shot Reub and The Reloaders do succeed in pulling it off,
in no small part because of Reuben Vigil's superb and adventurous guitar
work.
The best moments are on the jump and swing Blues tunes like the
opening track, "So Much Inside Me," and "Big Shot Roll." The slow Blues,
"I Don't Drink," showcases the more emotional side of Rueben's guitar playing
and singing.
Rueben's vocal style takes a bit of getting used to, but
if you enjoy the simplicity of the guitar trio format as we do, give
this CD a try.

Unconditional - Eclecto
Groove Records
Ana Popovic
This, the latest CD by Ana Popovic, is in our opinion her finest thus
far. The opening track features hypnotic slide work by Ana and sets the
tone for an aural joy ride. The second track, "Count Me In," explodes with
energy and just when you think it can't get any hotter,
her guitar solo explodes onto the sonic turf with relentless intensity.
We've heard it said that Ana Popovic is widely regarded as one of the world's
very best female guitar players. We would strongly suggest removing the
word "female" from that description. This is not a gender thing - she is
one of the best, period. Track number five has her dueling with slide virtuoso
Sonny Landreth - and oh, it hurts so good!
This entire CD sparkles with
beautifully written songs (mostly Ana's compositions), intense vocals
and Ana's brand of red hot, unique guitar playing.
Go get it! Now!

Leave The Light On - Blind
Pig Records
Sena Ehrhardt Band
Ok. Where do we start? We listen to a lot of Blues and tons of CDs. Many
of these are by new artists as well as established veterans. And as we
say, "You only get one chance to make a first impression." Which is why
if you don't get our attention from the opening bar (or 12), we're done.
Well...from the opening bar on the very first tune, "My Bad,"of
this CD, we were hooked. Hopelessly.
Many of the CD's songs feature funky, syncopated rhythms
and they all showcase tasty, articulate guitar playing. This combination
lays down a firm and original foundation for the dynamic vocal style of
Ms. Ehrhardt.
Oh, and that original foundation? No wonder!
Every tune is written by Sena Ehrhardt and her guitar player father, Edward
Ehrhardt. And these songs are truly original. We've seldom heard a new
artist debut with the quality of songs, arrangements, production
and performance to rival this. Every tune is a winner.
We highly recommend this CD.

Blues with a Smile - Blue
Bass Music
Biscuit Miller
The CD title, "Blues with a Smile," perfectly describes this song collection.
From the opening track, "Belly Up Some Blues," we were captivated with
the upbeat and soulful treatment of the all original songs.
The second track, "Sleepin In the Dog House," had us smiling and enjoying
the humor and the fabulous groove.
And not only are the songs well written and arranged, the musicianship
throughout is superb - juicy sounding guitar, well rounded vocal harmonies
and that pervasive and relentless groove. Tasty!
But above all, the music really did make us feel good and smile. Highly
recommended.

Greyhound - Eclecto
Groove Records
Mike Zito
This CD of all original compositions is chock full of masterful arrangements,
gut wrenching vocals and thick n' juicy guitar tones. The title track in
particular is filled with great rhythm and lead guitar and a chorus that
soars
above the rock solid rhythm section.
But every song on the CD tells a story and all the listener needs to do
is sit back, listen and enjoy.
It's a musical journey worth taking.

Look Out! - Delta
Groove Music
Terry Hanck
The text on the CD cover proclaims "Greasy Soul Rockin' Blues," and we
can't think of a better way to describe it. The CD rocks! Plenty of soul
rockin' tenor sax and lots of jump jivin' Blues! You like to swing? That's
here too! Some slow blues? Got ya' covered! Terry Hanck has assembled a
world class band to back him on this highly entertaining and joyful CD.
The combination of great originals along with some time tested blasts from
the past combine to make this CD and all its performances a tasty treat!
Definitely...Look Out!

Lit Up! - Wildroots Records
Victor Wainwright & The Wildroots
Wow! From the opening track, "Big Dog's Running This Town," the
CD sizzles and sears with red hot energy and intensity. Superb musicianship,
wonderful original tunes that nail the authenticity of the genre, and great
arrangements make this CD a sonic treat. Up tempo tunes like "Coin
Operated Woman"
and "Honky Tonk Heaven" highlight Victor Wainwright's keyboard
chops, and the overall diversity of the tunes and arrangements gives the
talented band members plenty of room to shine. Get Lit Up!

imitate the sun - 2
Shirts Records
Chris Bergson Band
This is a subtly seductive recording. It didn't immediately grab us.
Instead, it slowly captivated us and grew on us with each repeated play
- it drew us in. The mostly original songs are well crafted - and so
is Chris's guitar playing. A well crafted recording by a master craftsman
is how we'd tend to describe it. Chris's guitar eschews the gimmicky
trappings of so many of today's artists - and therein lies the beauty
of it. A pure unadulterated tone. One that allows the listener to really
hear the nuances in Chris's playing. The subtle expressiveness is there
for the discerning listener - very refreshing in today's over processed
world of pedal saturated guitar players. This is honest music. Performed
honestly by a song writer, singer, guitarist and artist that knows his
craft and knows it well. Give it a listen - a good listen, and let it
capture you. |
